The Anatomy of a Painting December 2008 |

Canvas, paint, and numerous art supplies cover the work space in STUDIO mars, located at 418 N. 7th Street. Abstract paintings are tastefully displayed on the walls of the gallery. It is difficult to imagine where the inspiration for each piece originated.
Without a trained eye for art, it is nearly impossible to understand the skill and thought that goes into creating each abstract painting. It is difficult until one sits down with Paul Lorenz, a LowerTown Arts District painter who relocated to Paducah through the Artist Relocation Program five years ago.
Lorenz guides visitors to STUDIO mars through the creative process, opening their eyes to the depth and precision of his creative development process. For Lorenz, this is not just about throwing paint onto a canvas. It is a series of layers--layers built on a foundation with each layer complementing the layer that preceded it.
"Architecture is really a guiding force in what intrigues me and what I look at for inspiration," said Lorenz. "I call myself a painter, but paintings don't really inspire me all that much."
As Lorenz describes his work and how he arrives at the final image, he uses imagery from architecture to help the viewer understand the process.
"Architecture is very challenging in that it's a huge group effort. There are so many layers and details that go into how it all fits together. The depth of the process can be painful, but clever things come out of it as a result. It's much the same in painting," said Lorenz.
Lorenz describes the evolutionary process of painting--a process driven by experimentation and risk.
"You have to have confidence and courage to create. Everything is about pushing a tool to do something that it's not meant to do," said Lorenz. "The final image evolves through this process."

Lorenz began his career as an architect, educated at the Illinois Institute of Technology and the Chicago Institute of Art. This was pivotal to his success as a painter. His formal education helped him to understand how materials functioned and how each material supported other materials.
He continues applying this knowledge in his paintings, connecting and building his paintings through this process, pushing paint across the canvas until he arrives at a conclusion.
Lorenz is an internationally acclaimed artist, whose work is on display at galleries in Seattle, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Naples, FL, and Geneva, Switzerland. He has been involved in international art projects in Tunisia and helps coordinate the Artist in Residence program operated through the Paducah Arts Alliance.
