April 2010
Fantastic Fibers at The Yeiser Art Center |

 |
| Ball Gown by Courtney Baughman. Leather softballs stitched with ribbon |
What do worn out leather baseballs, fishing line, tea bags and peacock feathers all have in common? Each of these things has been used to create art in next month’s Fantastic Fibers show at the Yeiser Art Center, located at 200 Broadway, in Paducah’s historic downtown. The show runs from April 3 through May 1.
Visitors to this year’s show will be amazed at what can be done with a variety of fibrous materials. Two- and three-dimensional fine art and craft has been created using a range of traditional and non-traditional materials. Pieces that will be on display include “Ball Gown,” a dress made out of leather baseballs, “Grandmother’s Tea Garden,” a quilt made out of tea bags, and “Dandelion Magnet Staff,” an oversized dandelion created with fabric, magnets and wood. The petals on the dandelion are hands-on and can actually be removed and rearranged by the viewer. Other pieces include wall hangings, baskets, sculpture, wearable art, and large-scale temporary installations.

“This show appeals to a wider age group than our shows traditionally have done,” said Hannah Gray, Assistant to the Director.
However, not everything in this year’s show is so abstract. There will be a variety of tapestries, baskets and quilts on display. Art has been created using cotton, silk, wool, and a range of synthetic fibers and manmade materials.
“This show is probably my favorite exhibition,” said Michael Crouse, director of the Yeiser Art Center. “It blurs the line between craft and fine art. There is such diversity in materials used to create each piece. These are the sorts of pieces you would see in a fine art gallery in a larger city.”

Fantastic Fibers began as a wearable art show in 1987 and over the years has developed into a comprehensive, international fiber art show, showcasing a range of artists and their work. The show went on hiatus for several years before being reintroduced at the Yeiser Art Center during last year’s annual American Quilter’s Society’s Quilt Show, which is hosted in April at the National Quilt Museum in downtown Paducah.

Over 600 entries were received for this year’s juried show, with only 56 entries selected based on innovative techniques, skill and creativity. Forty five artists’ work will be on display, including art from Peru and South Africa.
The show was juried by internationally-acclaimed art quilter, Caryl Bryer Fallert, Judy Schwender, curator at the National Quilt Museum and Freda Fairchild, nationally-known printmaker and fiber artist.
There will be an opening reception on April 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information on the Yeiser Art Center or Fantastic Fibers, please visit www.theyeiser.org.
