Local Musicians to Battle in Lowertown Band Brawl

This text will be replaced by the flash music player.
Six hot bands will battle it out in DJ Urban Kobbb's 2008 Lowertown Band Brawl, 3-6:30 p.m., Saturday, May 10, at the historic Texaco station at 7th and Madison streets.

The top three bands will perform at the Lowertown Art and Music Festival on Sunday, May 25, from 2-4 p.m. They'll battle it out again there, competing for cash prizes. The winning band takes home $1,000, with the second-place winners receiving $500 and third-place winners receiving $250. DJ Urban Kobbb will spin tunes between bands.

Here are the bands competing on Saturday, May 10:

The American Freedom Machine
performs at 3 p.m.

Kyle Dodge, guitar, vocals
Brent Lehr, bass, vocals
Kirk Mattingly, guitar, vocals
Catherine Parman, drums

The American Freedom Machine was fine-tuning its catalogue of country and rock-infused old-time folks tunes when drummer Catherine Parman joined the group. Since then, the accessibility of the band's music grew, along with its show bookings. The group was voted second best country band in Louisville in the 2007 LEO Readers Choice Awards. The band has been expanding its fan base by traveling and playing outside of Louisville every chance they get.

Edging Kelli
performs at 3:40 p.m.

Tyler Hayden, drums
Luk Nichols, rhythm guitar
Ethan Reddick, bass guitar
Kalimb Wilson, guitar
Derek Yarbrough, lead guitar

Edging Kelli, formerly Hard to Handle, is an exciting group of friends from Carlisle County High School. They've performed together since 2006 and have twice won regional talent competitions. They've competed at the state level and will once again advance to state competition in Louisville this June. While balancing a busy school and performance calendar, Edging Kelli performs at various charity functions and benefits.

Please Standby
performs at 4:20 p.m.

Zaq Kickasola, lead guitar, vocals
Jacob Boyd, bass, vocals
Jesse Sutton, rhythm guitar
Austin Jarboe, drums

Paducah-based pop/punk Please Standby quartet is known for their creative song writing, musicianship and energetic stage presence. The members are looking to grow as a band and to purchase the proper equipment to do so. Hence: they've entered the brawl.
NoaZark
performs at 5 p.m.

Breathitt Kelley, guitar, vocals and keyboard
Noah Kelley, drums

Breathitt and Noah Kelley are a father and son band from Cunninghan, Ky., and have performed together as NoaZark for five years. They're very popular among festivals, Downtown After Dinner, the Murray 4th of July Downtown Festival, Camp Currie, churches and the like. Breathitt teaches music in Mayfield; Noah is 8 years old, turning 9 the day after the brawl! He began playing drums when he was just 6 months old and performing for large crowds at the age of 4.
The Union Suit
performs at 5:40 p.m.

Jerry Davis, guitar
Cory Greene, bass
Jason Griffith, drums
Dan Tanner, guitar

Members of The Union Suit have played together (and separately) since the early 1990s. The band represents more than rock-and-roll. It's the unity of four like-minded musicians that forms a different sound. The result rejects categorization. In a world in love with labels, The Union Suit will not fit in, which is just fine by them. Despite their refusal to conform to the mold of modern music, The Union Suit will no doubt win you over with their stick-in-your head hooks, battling guitars, hard-driving rhythms and melodic vocals.
Special D
performs at 6:10 p.m.

Craig Felker, vocals
Jason Killebrew, drums
LJ Granstaff, guitar
Joel Purdy, bass

In the modern day music industry with dime a dozen sound-a-likes and flash in the pan overnight sensations, there's something to be said about an act with an unceasing work ethic and commitment to artistic evolution instead of merely following the latest fad. For western Kentucky alt-rockers Special D, that latter formula can perhaps be chalked up to their Midwestern upbringing or maybe it stems from the members' unwavering commitment to the creative process.
