The Secret Lives of iPods

DJ Urban Kobbb doesn’t mind admitting that the most surprising song on his iPod is I’m Just a Little Black Rain Cloud (playing now). Click the next button to hear No Sleep Till Brooklyn, which is on Char Downs’ iPod. Click it again to hear S.O.S., hidden away on ChristaD’s iPod.
iPod Top 10 Play Lists are a dime a dozen — or, at 99 cents a song, make that $11.88 a dozen. Everyone has one — from Elvis Costello and Sarah Silverman to romance writer Jackie Collins and President Bush.

What’s more interesting than a Top 10 list? How about the one song folks would be surprised to hear blasting through your ear buds? The secret song that causes you to make sure no one else is listening?

I’ll even go first. It’s I’m Just a Little Black Rain Cloud from Winnie the Pooh. Why? Because Pooh Bear is a complete enigma. He can’t spell and he taps his head to think. But he has a profound understanding of others in his world. I wouldn’t mind being a little more like Pooh.

It’s these songs that tell more about us than any other. I say, embrace your inner ABBA! Hold your head high when you hum along to Hanson! Be proud of your Paris! As you can see below, you won’t be alone!

We ask Paducah celebrities: What’s the most surprising song on your iPod?

Gin & Juice — Snoop Dogg
“I’m a closet Snoop Dogg fan!”
Tara Miller
Lourdes Hospital

Hot August Night — Neil Diamond
“Because I like hot August nights any time of year.”
Brett Duwe
Cynthia’s Ristorante

You Should Be Dancing The Bee Gees
“I am really embarrassed to admit that I have this on my iPod, but I would be even more embarrassed if you saw me dancing to it.”
Aynex Mercado
LowerTown Information Center

Knowing Me, Knowing You — ABBA
“Sigh.”
Lew Jetton
Paducah Area Transit System

No Sleep Till Brooklyn Beastie Boys
“It's as in-your-face as I can stand on my iPod.”
Char Downs
Pinecone Art Gallery

I Can’t Make You Love Me — Bonnie Raitt
“I sing and listen mostly to gospel music, but I like country music, too, because the songs tell a story.”
Monica Clark
New Greater Love Missionary Baptist Church

MmmmBop Hanson
“I know the words and sing along loudly!”
Patrick Kerr
Jackson Purchase Energy

Jesus Freak DC Talk
“This song gives us a true meaning of why we are here. If we do not live for our Lord Jesus Christ, what is our purpose?”
Sonia Osman
Vanguard Contractors

Aaron's Party — Aaron Carter
“It’s great to power-walk to!”
Laura K
MileHighStyle

Total Eclipse of the Heart Bonnie Tyler
“Being a musical promoter of local, mainly punk, metal and other stereotypically ‘young and loud teen-angst’ types, you might be surprised that I personally listen to more classic soft tunes. This song, and any track by Seal, get the most playtime for me!”
Hooper
Hooper Booking & Promotion

S.O.S — ABBA
“Love that song (much to my own embarrassment).”
ChristaD
Namaste what?!

Subterranean Homesick Blues — Bob Dylan
“The song actually was a protest of society at that time —
a desire to change the way we look at government and society.”
Gayle Kaler
Chantilles
City Commissioner, Paducah

Believe Me Pretty Mama — Nick Drake
“Some people say they feel sad when they listen to Nick Drake, but for me it is just calming.”
Renee Nunez

Come on Down — Theme song from The Price is Right
“I'm not a big fan of game shows, but there's something about that theme song that gets me psyched.”
Jay Page
Dairy Queen

Hollaback Girl — Gwen Stefani
“I can't resist the sound of a marching band cadence. It brings back memories of my days as an All-American Cheerleader cheering all across the country, including at the Hula Bowl!”
Donna-Maria Walker
Donna-Maria Walker Strategic Communications

Stars Are Blind — Paris Hilton
“Paris and I have similar vocal talent, and this song really shows my range!”
Sarah Bynum
Federal Materials

I Don’t Want Anything to Change — Bonnie Raitt
“Because it takes a mature person to accept another's ways.”
Alonzo Davis
Artist, AIR Studios

Ashokan Farewell — The O'Neill Brothers
“I’m a bit of a history buff and this piece comes from The Civil War, a film by Ken Burns. Every time I hear it I go into a trance and imagine myself living in the 1860s!”
Brad Simmons
CSI

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas — No artist cited
“I have Christmas music on my iPod thanks to my little sister Stacey! This song is terrible and stays in your head!”
Julie Solliday
American Justice School of Law

Reality Used to be A Friend of Mine PM Dawn
“More than likely, no one knows who or what this sounds like. But it is an all time favorite of mine!”
Amy T. Nolan
Artist

Sweet Child O' Mine Guns & Roses
“It totally rocks!”
Maurie McGarvey
Paducah Bank
